I have a problem with gratuitous use of the f-Bomb. So I was very disappointed to have been reading along and enjoying the book and running into the f-bomb before even getting through the first chapter. The multiple star reviews must be from people that use or don't mind vulgar language. I wasn't expecting to find it in a book about joy. It's one thing to encounter this word in a fiction book where it fits the character, but it's entirely inappropriate, in my opinion, in a non-fiction book about joy. Wish you could get a refund for books that contain vulgarity when it's unexpected/unnecessary for that genre.

As a designer I am always interested not only WHAT works by WHY things work, aesthetically speaking. It's easy to know what you like, easy enough to find out what people are drawn to, but understanding conceptually why we like what we do and are drawn to what we are drawn is often mostly elusive knowledge - until now.

From smaller nuggets - that the word "gaudy" has Latin roots from which the word joy was also derived, to broader and more impactful observations - that our physical environment can also deeply effect our physical health and mental well being - Ingrid lays out a perfect blueprint for understanding, appreciating and creating joy.

She even examines the art (and explores the validity of) of Feng Shui, the larger ideas of both harmony and abundance and how even simple things like indoor plants can channel the direction and mood of our daily activities. These points seem obvious once stated, but is not something we often take the time to think about. Her examination of joy is far reaching - from landscape architecture to one of my favorite interior designers Dorthy Draper - to the more obscure and magical Icelandic elves, with each chapter coming at her topic from a new angle. Perhaps a side effect of her book, as I type this I am sitting in between flights in a drab, greyscale, commercial/industrial airport wishing someone would come in with a paintbrush and and splash the walls and floors with some pinks, blues and yellows. It would make waiting for my next flight a lot less tedious, even joyful!
Last year was a rough year, and 2019 isn't looking too great either. I begin this book with a healthy level of skepticism— wondering whether there truly was an "aesthetic" to joy. Page by page, however, Ingrid won me over. Tying gut feelings to scientific studies and observations, she made the case for why certain things bring us joy, while others do not. I was delighted that she even includes worksheets on how to start discovering your own joy and incorporating more of those things into your life. Since reading the book, I'm finding myself adding more pops of color to my wardrobe, venturing further away from the all-black uniform usually assumed by designers and New Yorkers (and goths). It's even made its way into my manicures, which now receive more compliments than ever. Needless to say, 2019 is looking a bit brighter.
This is a joyful book to read. She is not only a good researcher, she's a good writer. I've nearly finished it once. At first I rushed through. Now I'm savoring it more. I will read it again to mark up all the sites she mentions, all the artists I want to follow. Would love to go on a tour with her.
Ingrid Fetell Lee devoted years to in-depth study of one transformative idea human beings are capable of designing our own happiness from the outside in. We are often taught that inner joy has little-to-no relationship to our external environment. In JOYFUL, she clearly and confidently demonstrates the wrongheadedness of this view of our basic nature and potential for experiencing more happiness more of the time.

JOYFUL shows us that our world's natural harmony provides the most renewable and accessible sources of joy. We’ve evolved to gravitate toward certain universal aesthetics – shapes, colors, and other sensory effects. These hardwired characteristics and environmental responses have kept us alive as a species for thousands of years. They also explain why we stop to watch a beautiful sunset, flock to see cherry blossoms bloom in spring, and can’t help but smile when new snow blankets the ground. By understanding the components of blissful moments, we can transform joy from an intangible, fleeting feeling, to something that stays with us throughout the day.

Thank you, Ingrid Fetell Lee, for writing a wise and fascinating book that has changed my life!!
A not too technical read with a lot of anecdotes but interesting and gives one a green light to like whatever they want and express themselves, to be happy. Highly recommended. Since reading it I've worn far more pink, purple and colors of every kind, and acquired monster feet slippers and winter socks with woolly sheep ears that made me smile. I've stopped rushing and slowed down to listen to some nature. Admired a sunset or two and at least partially it is because of this book.
Lovely book; somewhat inspiring. For a book about the visual world...where are the images? It would have made the book truly special to show the bank in Japan as well as many other things and scenes described. The line drawings should have been left out and replaced with colorful images.
Read this book with your iPad in your lap. Looking up the places and objects described in the book added much to the experience. The surprise hiding under the dust jacket is still making me smile. Fascinating information that fired my imagination as I read. Joy is everywhere and it is easy to bring into our environments. I realize how much I’ve let other people’s ideas of good taste dictate what I wear and how my home looks. I’m full of new ideas and will use the toolkit provided to help me bring my own brand of joy to my life.
