"I know when to quit, Faythe. I quit when my heart tells me there's no chance of success. But it's not telling me that. Not yet. Not about you."

Faythe is a shifter who has been running from her responsibilities as daughter to the pack alpha, by continuing school and trying to integrate into mainstream life. But when kidnappings begin happening among other shifter females, she is called back home and back into the world she left behind.

Overall I enjoyed this story. The romance was interesting, even if we didn't get to see much of it in this book. I am hoping that at least part of the continuing series deals with Marc and Faythe some more. There were parts of the story that were kind of sluggish to me, and there should be some trigger warnings for kidnapping, violence, and attempted rape.

Stray Shifters Book 1 Rachel Vincent 9780778324218 Books Reviews

I think I want to start off by saying that werecats are way awesomer (yes, I said awesomer P) than werewolves! I would choose a werecat over a werewolf any day!! The idea of werecats is so unique that I love it! Maybe there's more books out there about werecats, but this is the only book I've heard about them. I really liked how Rachel said in this book how Hollywood got the transformation right but got the species completely wrong!! I was LMAO! Ha ha werewolves, ha ha )

Okay, so the review...

Faythe Sanders (a werecat) has been trying to stay away from her Pride by going off to college. But five years later she returns home, leaving behind her normal college life, human boyfriend Andrew, and her somewhat confused roommate Sammi. Of course, not by her own account.

Female werecats (tabbies) are very rare, and therefore, valuable (there are only 8 in the US to be exact). So when someone starts kidnapping (or is it catnapping? lol) some of the few tabbies from across the country, Faythe is forced back to the protection of her home. She isn't happy about it, but there isn't anything she can do about it either.

The first tabby taken was Sarah, a friend of Faythe's. The next one to disappear was Abby, Faythe's own 17-year-old cousin. One or two days later, Sarah was found...dead.

Now completely pissed off and agreeing that this has been going on too far, all of the Alphas of the American territories come together in a meeting to figure out what to do about this.

But in one distracted moment, Faythe gets caught by the mysterious kidnapper as well. Now, I have to admit this was pretty stupid of her. I mean, her father gave her 24/7 protection for a reason Abby is still missing!!! But, oh no, Faythe has to go out by herself early in the morning before anyone is a wake, and get herself in trouble.

In a way though, I think it was a good thing she got captured. If this would've never happened to her, who knows what would've happened to Abby. Plus, they would've never found out about Ryan (Faythe`s brother). I have one word for you Ryan is crazy!!!! I understand that he had no choice and was forced to do the things he did because if not, well, they would kill him. But OMG!!!!! I still cannot believe him!! *takes deep breath*

Faythe has become one of my favorite heroines. She is very strong, smart (sometimes, lol), independent, and she proved that she can take care of herself. To sum it all up, she is badass!!! Love her!
Another character I love, Jace. *sighs* And I will admit, the reason why he caught my attention was because of his name (if you don't know already I am a huge Mortal Instruments fan...especially a Jace fan ;)). And I couldn't help myself but compare them. The results They are more alike then I would've thought! Of course, they're looks are different (but both are still gorgeous!), and Jace from TMI is more cocky and arrogant than Jace from Stray. But I still love them both!!

So when Marc beat the hell out of Jace because Faythe took his car keys, I got very, very mad!!! I would've liked to pull Marc out of the book and showed him how I felt...okay, that's a little aggressive lol.
I also feel like Faythe should've chosen Jace over Marc. But I still have a few more books ahead of me to find out )

And the strays who did the kidnapping,...OMG did they get under my skin! They are so sick!! And I don't want to reveal too many spoilers, but I never thought I'd see the day where I'd be sooo happy that someone got dismembered! But come on, they sure as hell deserved it!!! But now I'm wondering if they'll catch the last of the five guys who were doing the kidnapping. I guess I gotta stay tuned for the next book )
It wasn't for me but if you like the main character, then you will enjoy way more than myself.
It wasn't bad, but the narrator was so annoying, that it really ruined the story for me. I love the concept, and there are plenty of characters that are fantastic. However, when you are writing from a single first-person-point-of-view, the character has to be likable, and if not that at least make it so that the reader feels that the narrator is right. I hope that makes sense. I know that with a strong female character it can be really difficult to balance out, unfortunately in this case it didn't work for me.
So if Fayth (I hope I spelled that right) is your kind of strong female character, then this is for you.
"I wasn't that bad."
She smiled. "You broke Ethan's arm."
"It was self-defense. He wouldn't let go of my foot."
"He was helping you tie your shoe."
I shrugged. I remembered it differently.

Faythe has always been a handful it seems. She is smart, stubborn, headstrong, slightly aggressive and defiant. So much so that at times in the book she was hard for me to like. But she is a werecat so all of those attributes are a benefit to the only female of her family. Faythe has been trying so hard to run away from her family and her past. She ran off to college to try to escape the life she was supposed to have and Marc the man she was supposed to love. But when the women of the other prides start going missing she is called back to her family for protection. She has to leave behind Grad School and her very human boyfriend Andrew. While she hopes that it is only temporary Faythe can't help the feeling that she will be sucked back into the life and the man she was so desperately trying to avoid.

It was an addiction. A pointless, self-destructive addiction. But really, is there any other kind?

There are things that I really liked about this book and things that really bothered me. Let me start with the stuff I liked. I loved the idea of werecats and prides and the setup of the world they live in. I enjoyed reading about behaviors while in cat form and the family structures. I found it fascinating and a different take on the whole `were' thing as a whole. I enjoyed the writing style, pacing and most of the characters. There are plenty of Alpha male moments and Marc is the ultimate alpha trying to protect the woman he loves that broke his heart so many years ago. Even though Marc was a bit over the top with his animal instincts at times I still thought his whole alpha male thing was attractive and sexy in the book. But girls, in real life, most of his actions would be wrong on so many levels.

The thing I didn't like about the book, and this is just my personal preference, was the actual storyline. Wait, don't hate me, the plot was well thought out and flowed well, however the content of the storyline is what I didn't like. I say this only because a portion of this book is about capture and rape. While there is no actual rape scene to read, a few of the women in this book are brutalized and you know it. I have a very difficult time with this type of content and while it was written well and not too graphic the subject is slightly disturbing to me and the detracted from my overall enjoyment of this particular book in the series.

I told you not to touch her. And I meant it. If you lay a hand on her again, you'll have more to worry about than her ripping out your heart. I'll save her the trouble and do It myself

That said there is a lot of potential for future story arcs in the series. I like the overall concept and so I will read on in the series to give it a solid shot as I think I will not have an issue with the content in future storylines. Faythe has a lot of growing to do and I can't wait to see if she can keep up with the boys and kick some butt in the future.
