This author did a fantastic job of weaving this tale. The setting was great. Some authors spend too much time describing and re-describing the setting but this book was just right. There were a lot of characters (therefore suspects) but it was easy to keep them straight. The characters were well developed and I really liked the main character, Isla. A few times I thought I had it figured out, I kept changing my mind on "whodunnit". This is a well written and engaging mystery.Tags : Stranger in the Woods: A Tense Psychological Thriller - Kindle edition by Anni Taylor. Stranger in the Woods A Tense Psychological Thriller edition by Anni Taylor Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
What a fantastic novel! I’ve never read any novels by Anni Taylor. This was my first novel, & it certainly won’t be my last! The setting of Scotland was very picturesque and well described. Although there were several characters, it was easy to keep them all straight in my mind. The novel begins with the basic plot——Isla travels to the Scottish highlands to photograph a well-known architect Alban McGregor & his family for a perspective. Isla is drawn gradually into the McGregor’s lives, as well as the other neighbors in the area. Family tensions ignite with Isla as the catalyst. Isla discovers she’s lost months of her past life, as her buried memories and traumas begin to surface. The novel begins with the kidnapping, discovery, and death of the McGregor’s oldest child Elodie 2 years ago. Ms. Taylor writes so descriptively the reader feels the pain of the bereaved parents at the moment of Elodie’s death. Her death had a cummulative effect on the neighbors, and all their lives were changed because of it.
The plot enlarges and branches out when Isla discovers she’s missing months of her life’s events from 2 years ago.
This novel is more than a mystery. It’s also a psychological study of the characters. Ms. Taylor portrays her characters with empathy and depth. This is a novel I won’t soon forget.
Isla Wilson was a Sydney girl through and through. Her love of photography led her to many interesting jobs, and many not-so-easy-to-work-with clients. But when she applied for a month-long assignment in the Scottish Highlands and was given the job immediately, she didn’t know whether to be excited or nervous – perhaps both.
Architect Alban McGregor and his wife Jessica owned the property where Isla would be staying and working, and Greer was the person who was coordinating it all. But as Isla began to learn the history of Braithnoch, she also learned about the abduction of Alban and Jessica’s eight-year-old daughter Elodie two years prior, and the birth of Rhiannon. What she learned shocked and horrified her. Jessica seemed neurotic; Alban distant and moody. What on earth had she let herself in for?
With the old, dilapidated playhouse still standing; the strange and eerie tattie bogles dotting the landscape; and the neighbours that Isla felt distinctly uncomfortable around, her feelings that danger was closing in were strong. But with the recent blanketing of snow surrounding her cottage and everywhere she looked, it seemed that escape wouldn’t be an option. She really did want to return to Sydney – sooner rather than later…
Stranger in the Woods is another deep, dark psychological thriller from Aussie author Anni Taylor – she’s definitely a master of the genre! Incredible and unexpected twists; heartbreaking scenarios; fear and pranks going wrong – the pages almost turned themselves! An excellent read which I highly recommend.
started out promising then veered off the terrain. someone name me a consistant mystery writer. Please!
Too far fetched. Could have been good enjoyed the first part but then got too unbelievable. Too many co incidences. And then Isla just happened to get the job in the same spot that all of this happened to her in another country years back. Come on. Spoiler It feels like the author used memory loss to get away with not having to explain the bizarre happenings in the book properly. Won't read this author again.
I really enjoyed this book. When I purchased it, there were no customer reviews yet, so I went by the description and decided to take a chance. I'm glad I did. It was very well written, kept me intrigued throughout, and had enough information to make the mystery interesting, but not quite enough to figure it out until it was revealed. It kind of reminded me of the gothic novels that I used to read by Victoria Holt, Phyllis Whitney and Mary Stewart (which is not a bad thing at all). Very enjoyable. Highly recommended.
Stranger in the Woods pulls you in and holds you tight in its grasp from start to finish. From the very beginning with Elodie running through the woods to escape an unknown attacker. We then get to meet Isla who’s a talented photographer with epilepsy. Anni gives you a glimpse of Isla wanting more than what she can do at home. She wants adventure to go out of her comfort zone in Australia. Dealing with her health and surprised memories Isla decides to go on that adventure. She takes you to beautiful Scotland where Isla receives more than she bargained for. With every chapter you have new questions and suspicions of what really happened to Elodie and to Isla. There’s also some twist that you do not see coming but you know that each character has a key role into bringing this book to life. I wanted more to the ending of this book, but you can always make your own assumptions of what happened next. With that said I can honestly say that I absolutely loved it. I couldn’t put it down.
