A Modern Love Story Jolyn Palliata 9781469969428 Books

I feel like I shouldn't have liked this book...but I did. Luc (m) and Robbie (f) meet in foster care at twelve years old and become fast friends. Ten years later they're in love and decide to give a relationship a go. The first half of this book is very sweet and funny watching them grow up together. Palliata gave Luc some great dialogue. He was a riot.

But from the blurb you know Luc messes up. And he does it spectacularly. He picked the worst woman possible to have an affair with. It made for some good stay-up-all-night-reading entertainment though.

I think Palliata might have tried too hard to justify Luc's actions to us so we'd forgive him or so we wouldn't hate Robbie for forgiving him. I thought it was overkill. But, otherwise, if you occasionally like an angsty story this is a good one.

After witnessing the horrific & traumatizing accident that kills her parents, Robbie Byrne is placed in a foster home where she finds a friend and her first crush personified by her polarizing foster brother, Luc Cintrone. We watch their relationship grow through different phases and ages from awkward pre-teens to thriving young adults with quite a few obstacles and roadblocks in between. As usual from this author, the characters are so vividly drawn and their chemistry is so palpable you have to remind yourself they are fictional characters.

Approximately half of the book is sweetness and light (much like introductory Robbie to my thinking) and the second half is the direct opposite (representative of introductory Luc to me). I was extremely annoyed when the leads took separate vacations (her to Stupid-ville and him to Idiot-burg), but loved them together. What's a love triangle without a 3rd person? (Well it's not a love triangle.) The third person here is Payten Carmichael and Payten is determined to make the world her oyster and has the funds and the audacity to go as far as her mind will take her. Suffice it to say, Payten does not go gentle into that good night.

Other pluses to me included how risky it was to make your hero do things that border on unforgivable and bring him back to redemption; another was how great an unapologetically deplorable & diabolically despicable villain Peyton really is. I found myself hard put to not be passionate about this character as well - in a different direction but passionate nonetheless. Cynic that I am, I didn't have an iota of faith that the villain was anything other what she turned out to be - a nest of wasps at a picnic.

What didn't work well for me was Payten. I thought - great character but the introduction should have been earlier especially in light of how pivotal the character was. Because of the late intro she felt shoe-horned in and unbalanced the book. Again related to the Payten character but the shoe-horning resulted in plot holes (IMHO).

Ms. Palliata puts quite a bit of humanity in her writing and runs the complete gamut of emotions; in fact she does well with all of the standard mechanics that make a story. If you've not read some of her works it might be time to give yourself a little treat.
First half 5 STARS!
Second half 3 STARS!
Overall story 4 STARS (3.5 STARS)

The beginning of this novel was absolutely spectacular. The first few chapters introduced different significant moments in Robbie and Luc's lives, from ages twelve to twenty. Instead of detailing every second of Robbie and Luc's childhood, Ms. Palliata covered the most important moments, focusing on the important roles that they played in one another's lives. When we first meet the characters, Luc is a foul-mouthed hellion and Robbie is a shy, scared little girl. They are complete opposites, but they share a unique connection and they form a bond stronger than steel.

I absolutely loved the first half of this story. It was emotional, comical, romantic, and most importantly, realistic. It reminded me of one of my favorite novels, That Boy by Jillian Dodd. At the halfway mark, I was fully prepared to give this novel a 5 STAR rating.

The second half of this novel was good, but it wasn't as good as the beginning. It was entertaining, but it was also over dramatic and unbelievable. After Palliata introduces the characters backgrounds, she catches up to present day time when Robbie is twenty-two-years old. For me, this is where things started to go downhill. At first, it seemed like Robbie and Luc were finally going to get their acts together and find happiness, but then crazy drama and outside forces a.k.a.psycho Payten intervened.

Payten. On one hand, Ms. Palliata did a wonderful job creating the perfect villain. Heck, I don't think I've ever disliked a character as much as I disliked Payten. The little home-wrecker got to me. She made me angry; she put me in a bad mood. I think it's a pretty powerful thing when a character can affect your mood to the point that you want to punch things. I didn't enjoy being in a bad mood, but I did appreciate the fact that I was affected because I cared so much about the characters and the story. On the other hand, Payten's behavior was over the top, too freaking crazy for words. Her behavior made a realistic, relatable story unrealistic and unrelatable. In my opinion, she brought this story down a little. I think I would have rated this story much higher if she would have been a little less crazy.

Another thing that lowered my rating for this novel was the ending. I'm not saying that it's a bad ending. I'm not saying that it's not a happy ending. All I am saying is that I was disappointed. After all of that crazy drama, I wanted more. I probably would have rated this novel higher if it would have had an epilogue.

I gave A Modern Love Story by Jolyn Palliata 4 STARS (3.5 STARS)! A Modern Love Story was an addicting story full of drama, romance, and suspense. I recommend this novel to mature young adults.
