Interesting story about Chernobyl and the attempt to cover the reactor with a huge shield. The contractor wanted it finished in a hurry. The local scientist in-charge wanted it to be safe. A female scientist went to help the local man but ran into a supernatural force that was causing all types of problems mostly with the software. The idea behind the story was interesting the execution of the plot was lacking. The supernatural force was not convincing. The ending was up in the air with no closure.Product details

This novella is solidly in the Lovecraft universe and yet is so distinctively itself! It was a pleasure to read it and as someone who was in high school during the time of Chernoble (which I just misspelled...sorry!), I found it particularly evocative. I also found myself quite fond of the main characters. Well done!
Hokey caricatures and situations...good on physical details of the landscape and plant at the Chernobyl site (and local lore) especially in light of Japan's Fukushima....ends in an abruptly negative fashion.
Been reading recently an excellent book of Pryp'Yat with a good plot, thriller, suspence, and with only 5 characters. A comparison with this book is inevitable.
Sadly, the author offers but doesn't deliver.
1. Characters - Don't feel any emphathy or connection with the characters. They're mere puppets moving around without a firm converge. A path that doesn't exist so, where nobody meets.
2. The plot - I really don't find one, maybe it's written like a greed corporation and the characters around but you don't feel scared, tension, suspense. Is flat even when Dr. Cox is in a "peril".
The american was a laught carton character, very square and inecessary.
Dr. Cox between thinking in the past, her boyfriend, somewhat trying to descipher what's going on (never had) are as cold as an ice block. His pregnancy doesn't even create expectation.
Her problem in the forest, rescue and forewarning from the old lady even lack of suspense, I had the urge to moved to the last page, but that will be cheating.The scene is so forced that yo don't even believed, why the author write it?
All around the book is FLAT, nothing is so credible that you can relate, feel inside of the scenes. Cox & Company are difficult to empath, no matter what you do.
Dr. Ostenberg, maybe the more emphatic but not as needed, just feel maybe a little sad by his body moves but no more than that.
The VV, well, lets just said that all the characters are like cartoons, just pitiful attemp to create a book.
The used of a folclore story well wrote could be a solid based for this book. But, even that doesn't scared a mouse.
Sadly and again, Hemplow doesn't create a path to moved characters, the plot, the coldness, the force scenes and history in the same book.
The lack of a flow story and characters is the fall of the book...
Words - Hemplow use many technical terms and doesn't provide the readers with a dictionary of terms so the reader won't be lost.
To finish, Hemplow needs to create characters tridimensional with personalities. A strong plot is needed and a credible story, all this and all lost.

Great mix of Southern Comfort and H.P. Lovecraft. Interesting story, I wish there was more.
Good writing, strong characters; I liked the tension between an occult view of the world coming up against a hard science view, and the way people come out of it. I was reminded of John Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness" in that way. The story is over pretty quickly, but it feels complete enough. The tension builds pretty well and it ties into the current state of the world that it feels pretty creepy. Reading this is a good way to spend a rainy afternoon.
Philip Hemplow's second novella, SARCOPHAGUS, is another great tale from this budding writer! I was thoroughly impressed with THE INNSMOUTH SYNDROME, and am pleased to add my recommendation to his latest, a blend of the Lovecraftian tale with the haunted ruins of Chernobyl. And it's interesting to see that he uses strong female protagonists in both stories. Well done! I just wish his two novellas were available in an affordable trade paperback format I'd scoop them up in a heartbeat! More, Mr. Hemplow, more!
The ruins of Chernobyl make a really good backdrop for this Lovecraftian story. The isolation of the location and the huge but crumbling buildings filled with invisible dangers are all vividly evoked. The story very nicely builds the level of tension as little clues accumulate. The transition to the 'big Bad' and the ending felt a bit rushed. This is a story which would have benefited if the final action were extended over another fifty pages.
Worth reading if you like this kind of thing!
