Love Bats Last The Tavonesi Series Heart of the Game Volume 1 Pamela Aares Books
Nice little romance. This is the first book I've read from Pamela Aares. I would have made it a 3.5 if I could.I liked the plot, and thought it was nicely written. The fact that the characters took longer than a few days to "fall in love" was refreshing. Even though the book spanned 5 months, the author was able to convey the passage of time without giving us boring daily run downs.
The only issue that I had with the story was that Jackie really was an unpleasant person. I wouldn't want to spend any time with her at all, least of all volunteering to work for her. I would write a check for the nonprofit and move on. So, I found it hard to understand why Alex was so willing to put himself out there for her. I think Jackie's general character could have been written to be likable, but relationship challenged and that would have provided enough conflict between the two leads.
I would read another book from the author.

Love Bats Last The Tavonesi Series Heart of the Game Volume 1 Pamela Aares Books Reviews
3.5 stars
A romance with a mystery and suspense throw in, Love Bats Last was a fun read. We meet Jackie (a vet for a seal rescue) and Alex (a baseball player and winery owner) when he helps Jackie out of a jam near his property.
These two are interesting to watch. Jackie is determined to not have a relationship and Alex is equally determined to get to know her. It was really nice to watch a guy like Alex (famous baseball player + wealthy land owner) actually have to work to get to know a woman. The fact that he has a natural interest in the work she is doing goes a long way too.
It was much easier to like Alex than it was to like Jackie, she was pretty snappy and stand-offish, but we learned why later on in the story. The mystery and suspense elements are well woven into the book so that both the romantic and suspense story lines move forward without one detracting from the other.
I enjoyed the timing for when Jackie and Alex finally got together. They had been building to it for a while and it was wonderful to see things come to fruition the way they did. I didn’t really understand the argument that led to Jackie stormy off, but it served the purpose of the story.
I don’t want to give anything away, but I will say that I loved the ending. This is definitely a book I would suggest for a relaxing summer afternoon.
A lovely story about the California marine mammals and the scientists and volunteers who protect and care for them. An English Aristocrat Lady Jackie who is also a marine biologist, scientist and physician loves the marine mammals in the California Bay areas. She is taking soil and water samples in some of the inlets to find the cause of the pollutants causing the animals to die. Jackie encounters a man Alex on one of her stops for samples and he is intrigued with her. Alex offers to become a volunteer though he has a hectic schedule as a professional baseball player. Alex is also a vineyard owner and needs to find a balance between all of the parts of his busy life. The story unfolds in good order and gives very interesting details about California's marine wildlife and the efforts of the people who try to care for them.
IMO- the beginning of the story seemed to move rather slowly. There were lots of descriptions about the scenery and other things, and I started to get a little bored. BUT...I stuck with it and a few chapters later the story really took off with a bang. Now that I'm done, I realize that the story wouldn't have been as good as it was, if not for all those boring parts, because it was the very thing that literally set the whole stage for the rest of the story. Does that even make any sense to anyone, but me?
Anyway...I really loved Jackie and Alex together. Although, I'm not sure that in the beginning anyone would have thought they'd make a great couple, but they really did! I also really enjoyed the character of Gage, he was a real hoot and then some. He never seemed to get too upset about anything, and he just let all the barbs that Jackie threw at him roll off his back. Heck, half the time he just stood there and laughed, or threw a few wicked barbs back her way. And even though we didn't really get to see a lot of either Cory, Sabrina, or Bev, I really liked them also.
Actually I thgought this book was pretty informitive. I learned about how a player's mindset about the game, makes him a much better player. I've been a baseball fan for a long time and had no clue about the mental rigor, or the preparation in parallel with the physical skills for a player to be successful. I found that very fascinating, and unlike some sports realated stories I've read in the past...... it really didn't overwhelm the story. I also got a great education about marine mammal issues, and those committed to their sustenance and survival. All of it was very interesting stuff, or at least I thought so. Oh....and I really, really enjoyed the suspense part of the story, too, although I had pretty much figured out who the bad guys were by the time I got to the half way mark of the story.
Well written. Interesting information about sea creatures in trouble, their rescue and care. Likable characters, the romance part was fairly tasteful. I would like to read more by this author.
Well written interesting premise but something is missing. The love story between Dr. Jacqueline Brandon, Vet,and Alex Tovanesi, vintner, baseball player has a mystery running through it that when it concludes it is a tremendous let down. The reader is left hanging and has to work out for themselves what this was all about. It is a shame because the book really could have been great when at times it became a little long winded. Good side bar on baseball however that too left us a little short changed. Recommend you read it for yourself as you may not feel the same way I do. 2.5 Stars from me .............
